Happy Birthday Stan Laurel!

Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who after changing his name to Stan Laurel became the Laurel half of Laurel and Hardy, was born on June 16th, 1890. The team made several movies, including the silent classic Putting Pants on Philip (on Lost Films of Laurel & Hardy vol. 6), and the talkie greats Sons of the Desert and The Music Box (both available on the aptly-titled DVD Laurel & Hardy).

Stan Laurel Trivia

  • was unable to attend the funeral of Oliver Hardy
  • was married five times (to four women)
  • turned down a cameo in It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
  • had light blue eyes that didn’t register well on old orthochromatic film stock
  • his only son was born premature and died nine days later
  • Laurel & Hardy called “Stallio and Ollio” in Italy
  • Laurel & Hardy called “Dick und Doof” (Fat and Stupid) in Germany
  • won Oscar in 1960 for creative pioneering in the field of cinema comedy
